Air Gap

Arched head
Glazed or timber portion at top of window or door.

Awning window
Hinged along the top of the sash, awning windows open out.

Bay window
Three or more window units fixed together with returns fitted on angles.

Bars
Vertical or horizontal members dividing sashes or doors into multiple daylights

Bi Fold
Two or more sashes or doors fixed together that fold to one or both sides.

Bottom Rail
The bottom horizontal member in a window or door.

Casement Window
Hinged along the side of the sash and opening out.

Chair Rail
Fixed horizontal member separating upper and lower glass in a window or door.

Daylight Opening
The clear size through a glazed section.

Double Glazing
Two panels of glass with an air or gas filled gap between.

Double Hung Window
A window that has two vertically moving sashes controlled by spring/spiral balances or weights and cords each opening and closing the top and bottom sashes.

Energy Efficient Glass
Glass that helps with energy efficiency eg. Heat loss, heat gain, glare reflection.

Fixed Glass/Fixed Lite
Non opening window used for view and light only.

Float Glass
Annealed grade ‘B” safety glass.

Flush Bolts
Bolts mounted flush with the face of the door in a stile to lock the door in place. Non keyed types slide up into the jamb and keyed types slide down into the sill to securely lock the sash.

Flush Pull
Flush mounted pull handle fitted into style to provide means of opening or closing the door or window.

Frame
Outer component to support fixed glass, sashes or doors and also used to secure the window or door to the building/structure.

Glass
Transparent, translucent or opaque consisting of silica/silicates, soda and lime.

Glazing Bead
Timber section used to hold the glass or panels into a rebated opening.

Glazing Rebate
Stepped section part of the frame into which the glass is positioned.

Hinged Door
Door that is hung on the left or right hand side of a frame that opens in or out.

Head/Jamb
Top component of the window or door frame.

Horn
The extension of timber past the finished frame or sash. Eg sill extension or sash horn. A sash horn can be decoratively shaped.

Insulating Glass
Glazing with reduced thermal heat transfer compared with float glass.

Interlocker
Locks sliding styles together to create a mechanical seal.

Inlay Panel
Decorative mould inlayed around a fixed panel within a door or sash.

Jamb
Vertical external member of a door or window frame.

Laminated Glass
Two pieces of float glass with a plastic membrane between.

Lite/Light
A space where light can pass through within a door, sash or frame.

Louvre
Horizontal opening slats or blades fitted to timber frames. Slats are available in glass or timber.

Low-e
Low-emission glass that allows heat and light to pass through and blocks the heat from leaving the room.

Meeting Rail
The rails that meet in a double hung system when the sashes are closed.

Mullion
Vertical dividing component between multiple panels.

Obscure Glass
Textured glass used for privacy, light diffusion or decorative effect.

Pivot Door
A door that is mounted inbound of the edge along the top and
bottom allowing it to open in both an inward and outward direction.

Pelmet
A horizontal member used to cover hardware/track systems.

Primed Finish
Factory applied oil based undercoat treatment to prevent ingress of water into the surface and end grain from time of manufacture until installed in the building.

Profile
The shape machined around the inside edge of a sash or door in which the glass or timber panel sit against.

Rails
Top or bottom horizontal members of the window sash or door unit, excluding bars.

Raised Door Panel
A door panel on which the edges have been contoured or shaped to provide an aesthetically appealing three dimensional effect.

Sash
Inner frame that supports the glass in operable windows.

Sashless Window
Frameless vertical or horizontal sliding glass panels.

Sill
Bottom (horizontal) component of the window or door frame.

Sliding Window/Door
One or more horizontally sliding sashes which pass over fixed or sliding sashes in a single frame.

Stile/Side Rail
Vertical side members of a door or sash.

Storm Mould
A section that is added between the window frame and the building cladding.

Textured Glass
Glass with a rough or raised patterned finish.

Threshold
The member that lies at the bottom of a glass, hinged or pivot door that is not integral with the frame.

Timber Dry Finish
Factory applied clear water repellent treatment to prevent ingress of water into the surface and end grain from time of manufacture until installed in the building.

Transom
Horizontal dividing component between multiple panels.

U-Value
Rate of heat flow through a window or other building element. The lower the value, the better the insulating value (thermal resistance or R-value).

Weather Seal
Component used to aid the prevention of wind, rain, draught and noise entry via operable windows and/or doors.

Window Rating
Performance measurement for strength, resistance to water penetration and energy efficiency.
